Altra Jensen Coffee Table : Difficult to make. (P.S. I am smart enough to build complicated stuff)

Nice piece but troublesome to fit up. After partially completing the fit-up (only the top left), i must say that the table looks really nice. However, i may end up not screwing the top down and instead use some gorilla glue to get this thing fitted. This is the most horrible experience i’ve had trying to fit a piece of furniture together. The holes for most of the cam bolts and connector bolts are too small and it was a struggle to get them in. Those took me an entire night because i got so frustrated and had to stop frequently to calm down should i get too upset and damage the board ( which is not real wood- not an issue for me). The pre-drilled holes are not fully aligned and this causes major challenges especially when putting on the legs and now the top. One pair of cam bolts will fit nicely and then the opposite pair will rest on the wood and take some manipulation to get into the connectors. This of course causes some gap between several of the pieces but those aren’t very visible unless someone is closely inspecting the table. Perhaps the manufacturers should reconsider the cam bolt fit up,although i do like that they reinforce the holes. Overall, the item looks elegant but loses major points because of the difficulty in being fitted up. Sore fingers pads and palms, and having to consider glue definitely detract front he beauty of this piece. ***updated to three stars after i finally fitted the top without glue.

This table requires a power drill to re-drill some of the holes. This leads to a good rule of thumb for whether to purchase it or not: if you’re the kind of person who already has and uses a power drill, you’re probably fine; if not, then reconsider. This was a beast to assemble–and i say this as someone who really enjoys assembling ikea furniture. It required time-consuming prep work: i wiped down all pieces three times to remove excess stain (twice damp, once dry); sealed the stained edges of the feet with clear nail polish to prevent carpet transfer; and did aforementioned redrilling. But, nothing was missing and all the pieces do fit together–you just have to be really careful about following the instructions, and use good assembly practices (tighten evenly instead of one side before the other, don’t strip your screws etc. The instructional diagrams are adequate but a little enigmatic–even trying to be careful, i managed to misassemble one part because i’d missed a crucial detail of which direction the board was supposed to be attached. Possible to assemble this alone (i did) but it’d be easier if you had a partner, and a burlyish one at that (i’m a petite woman, and it was doable but annoying; you only have so many limbs). All that aside, it’s held up great for the couple months i’ve had it–not the sturdiest piece of furniture to start (i wouldn’t stand on it to reach a high shelf), but left alone as a coffee table, it does its vase- and book-holding job perfectly well.

Altra Jensen Coffee Table, Espresso

  • Two lower shelves, 1 divided for organization, hold your books and magazines
  • Coffee Table is finished on all four sides for versatile placement in your room
  • The straight lines and dark espresso finish create a nice center piece for your living room

I am smart enough to build complicated stuff). Making: the table is very hard to built. All the screws and tit-bits were packed into one bag without any labels so i had to guess what goes where. It takes nothing more than common sense to figure that out. This table requires you to screw stuff in a very hard to achieve angle. Seriously difficult positions. You better have flexible joints.

I was a little hesitant about purchasing this piece after reading all the reviews (hard to put together, stain comes off, flimsy). But i went ahead and bought it anyway, and i am happy that i did. I do not consider myself mechanically inclined by any means, but i found this pretty darn easy to put together. All the pieces fit properly, i had to use a hammer to work some of the pieces down into their holes but aside from that, i had no problems and in about an hour i had a new coffee table. I didn’t feel the need to use any wood glue, like some had suggested, as i felt it was sturdy enough. I wiped down all the pieces before putting it together and i did notice that some of the stain came off on the paper towel. But not enough to be alarmed and since i’ve had it all together and in use, no more stain has come off. Overall, i am pleased with this product and feel it was easy to put together. It is very heavy and solid, i have had no issues with it being flimsy.

I think my table is great for the price i paid. I think my table is great for the price i paid. Although, it’s about $20 less online at wal-mart. I don’t like doing projects, but this was pretty easy. The size is perfect for my living area. The table is heavy and sturdy.

This would be 5 stars if the last 2 screws were to fit properly in their place. . The reason for not giving this 5 starts is because 2 of the screws did not align properly. After putting the coffee table together the screws that are attached to the last/top piece of the coffee table did not line up with the side leg. I took the entire table apart checking each and every screw and corner trying to find where the mistake was made but there was none. Once again for the 2nd time i put the table back together and the same situation, the last 2 screws did not line up with the holes where they were supposed to be inserted. I had to use a hammer to bend the screws so they would fit into the last 2 holes. I would have returned the coffee table but it would have been more trouble trying to get this into the box and just much easier to bend the screws with my hammer. If it wasn’t for this it would be a 5 star review. Although, i will say after getting this together it is a very nice looking table. It is a very deep dark brown (almost black) and matches perfectly with my furniture.

The construction of this coffee table is top notch especially for the price. This coffee table made it 2years in a house of 4 20-25yr old guys so you can trust that it is sturdy and well built.

This is a compact and nice coffee table. This is a compact and nice coffee table. Sits well in our relatively small living room. However it was disappointing to note that some of the holes drilled were not aligned well. We had to extend some cuts/openings to align the screws right. Overall, it is ok but not stellar.

The finished product is pretty sturdy. Edges and corners probably could use some. The instructions that this came with was not very well printed. Certain instructions were barely legible and the picture was difficult to understand. Took sometime to put together, the finished product is pretty sturdy. Edges and corners probably could use some additional sanding to prevent getting hurt.
