South Shore 4-Shelf Storage Bookcase – Excellent for the price

I had been looking for an item of this description for almost a year. I needed an additional bookshelf which would fit inside the closet in the spare bedroom/den/office. An earlier attempt through target online came a cropper when a similar item arrived broken in two due to its poor construction, poor packaging and poor handling in transit. I had despaired of finding a solution but decided to give it one more try through amazon. This item is similar in size to the item i had ordered previously. It is of sufficient height to be useful, but just short enough to fit in the closet without removing the clothes bar. The item arrived via the same shipping company, but the item was in good order due to its stiffer construction and packaging. It was easy to assemble by myself and has alleviated the shortage of shelf space in the den/office. The mid level shelf is part of the structure and does not adjust.

It’s under my tv because my living room setting is strange. Wouldn’t recommend any heavy things on the shelves just the bottoms. Although it seems sturdy enough. Everyone’s reviews were commenting on how it starts to bend. I probably have around 10-30 pounds on each shelf and it’s holding up perfect. I made holes in the back to hide my tv and console cables.

I was a bit hesitant to order this and especially having to essemble it all by myself but it wasn’t bad at all. Maybe took me an hour or so. Glad i didn’t overspend for a simple and nice bookshelf for my kids room. The quality is definitely better than what it looks. The price was right and it was easy to put together. I’m a petite woman and did it all by myself. The trick is dragging the heavy box is comes in, into your house and unpacking. Lay it flat and just pull the pieces out one at a time. Construct it on the floor close to wear it will live. I followed the directions and everything lined up perfectly. I have it in my office and was able to get a lot of books on the shelf as needed for awhile.

We bought this for our small professional office. My ten year old daughter put it together (under supervision) with no issues. A drill/automatic screw driver of some sort is very useful for the assembly process. It looks great and is exactly what we expected. I’m considering buying a second so we can place them side by side for additional room. The top and bottom shelf are adjustable height while the middle is fixed for additional stability. It was easy to transport assembled, we put it together at home and then moved it to the office with no issues at all. Good product for less than we could find something similar at local chain stores.

Reviews from purchasers :

  • Great for a “hacked” wall unit.
  • Very satisfied, ignore the negative reviews!
  • it looks just like when I first got it

I’m not very pleased with this bookshelf. The shelves are too far apart to place books nicely and it’s way too deep. The middle shelf cant be adjusted and so the gaps are so big when placing the top and bottom shelf equidistant from each other. If you try and adjust, then it looks stupid with two shelves narrow and the middle gap huge. I know this probably doesn’t make sense but dont buy this if you just want a bookshelf. This is more for decorations and knick-knacks than as a dedicated bookshelf.

My wife is an elementary school teacher and needed something for staging books and materials in her home office. She didn’t want to spend much for an expensive piece of furniture in a workspace that people rarely go in. We bought this shelf unit based on price and the reviews from others. I’ve put together plenty of these types of units through the years and have to say that for the price, it’s probably the best value to quality unit i’ve seen. It was packaged well, no busted corners from shipping. All parts plus some extras were included (no missing bits). I turned on a one hour true crime show and finished putting it together before the show was over. It looks good and will do the job without breaking the budget. The only reason for 4 stars instead of five is that i prefer the shelf holders that go in the small holes for adjustments to be metal. This unit comes with plastic ones. They seem fine, but don’t know how they hold up yet.

First, let me say this is not a high end item. It is laminated particle board, so i did not expect it to be a fine piece of furniture. I bought two of these for my daughter’s room for her books and toys. For $60, they are actually pretty great. They are easy to assemble and quite sturdy. The bottom shelf, top of the cabinet, and center shelf are all fixed, but the other two shelves are adjustable. As a side note, i originally found these book shelves on kohl’s web site for about $120 each. Finding them on amazon for so much cheaper is great.

The particle board seems to be especially low density compared to some other brands like sauder which uses slightly smaller particle sizes. This unit will break apart along the bottom edge if not carefully moved as chips pull out. You will need to be extra careful on carpet as the wood catches on the fibers. They include felt pads for those on hardwood. This unit was not damaged, but i ordered two other products from south shore that did have damaged parts. South shore customer service is responsive and ship replacements promptly, but that takes several extra days. The buttons on the screws stick out visible on the sides. I wish those screws were recessed and had plugs instead of the larger plastic buttons. The buttons do not sit flush, instead there’s about a 0. 5mm gap between them at the sides.

This, after i finally got it out together looks really good and is sturdy. But i am not very handy and it ended up taking me 3 hours to finally put it together. The directions seemed slightly off, as in putting together certain areas it just wasn’t right when i did it. But, i finally got it together and it was good practice, so maybe the next thing i have to put together won’t be so bad.

I have five of them—three of the tall 5-shelf, one of the medium 4-shelf, and two of the tall, narrow ones. I also have the tall, narrow version in white. (plus, i bought a set of the matching nightstands) not one of these bookcases has let me down. They’re relatively easy to assemble, especially if you’re familiar with do-it-yourself furniture. Each one took my husband about an hour, give or take. The 4-shelf one was the easiest, since it’s short. He assembled it on his own, without any help from me, which should tell you how easy they are to put together. The color is a gorgeous deep cherry wood. There’s one shelf that’s permanently attached, while the others can be adjusted. The adjustable pegs are clear, so they vanish against the wood. There’s a narrow decorative panel that goes across the top, kind of a lip that fits underneath the top of the bookcase. It’s a simple design detail, but it looks great. However, it limits the height of the objects you can place on the top shelf.

I ordered fur of these bookshelves knowing they weren’t high end furniture, so my expectations weren’t unrealistic. I was disappointed by a couple of issues that are clearly quality control and easily avoidable. First, the parts go together with holes and dowels to align them properly. Unfortunately, i found that some of the holes weren’t drilled on center, which misaligned the parts. Second, the edge vernier on one of the side panels was noticeably irregular, right at eye level. It can be lived with, but their quality control should have caught it. Third, their instructions included a measurement used to position nails connecting the backing panel to the center shelf. Unfortunately, the measurement indicated was incorrect and had i used it the nails would have missed the shelf entirely. Luckily, i noticed the discrepancy before i nailed the back panel and found the correct location for the nails on my own. Fourth, take care when installing the plastic cover plugs over the screws.

I actually really liked this. It’s just the size i need but i also read the dimensions very carefully prior to buying. I’d like to think i have intermediate assembly skills. I’m 5 ft 115lbs and i had no issues following the directions and putting it together alone. It took me less than an hour. Note, the directions does recommend 2 people for assembly. I saw other reviews with damaged product but mine was not damaged. I also received extra screws so that was nice. The instructions were randomly cute, recommending to put on music while working. Lol they also say you have a 5 year warranty and to contact them if you receive damaged or missing items.

I wanted a basic looking black bookshelf, but didn’t want to break the bank. I also didn’t want a piece of crap cheap shelf either, because that can be worse. There is nothing worse than a cheap bookshelf with sagging shelves. I will say the finish on this one is quite nice and looks really good in the living room. It was extremely simple to assemble, but the first one i received was damaged during shipping. Make sure you check all the pieces first before you build. It’s really difficult to get it all back into the box. I contacted amazon, and they sent a replacement out immediately. The next one was perfect, so i installed it. I will say the backing is pretty cheap, as it’s that black cardboard like material you nail in place, but you really can’t tell it’s a cheap material unless you are really up close.

Good product, was exactly as expected for a cheap bookshelf. Perfect for our temporary needs in an apartment & later on when we get a house ill stick them in a kids room or something i suppose. I agree with another commenter that the back panel could be left off as it does cheapen the look a bit more. South shore should consider making more creases so it looks like bead board or the illusion of something more durable rather than a cardboard look. I may end up purchasing my own bead board and paint it a fun color before nailing it on there, but overall i am happy with this product for this price-point. I ordered 2 & thought i was going to have to wait to have my hubby put it together, but none of the pieces were missing & the instructions were pretty easy to understand so i had them both up pretty fast.

I bought 4, easy to put together, are filled with books, even across the top shelf. Screwed them together, then used the included angle irons to attach to wall studs. Looks great and holds a lot of books and dvd’s. Remember, that top shelf can hold plenty. Shipping was perfect – not a scratch. Every screw and nail was bagged and ready. The boxes are heavy, well padded. Delivery was amazon’s wonderful prime service. I bought one, then two more, then one more. Assembly time was about 45 min for the first, then 20 minutes for each as i got used to the method.

I am giving it four stars because i have just built it but not used it. I bought it for my 9 year old daughter; and the many negative reviews had me all prepared for a dusty, incomplete and poor quality package- but i thought: what the heck. I need it for a couple of years, then i will get something good for my daughter. But i was in for a pleasant surprise- first of all; it is not as dusty as many people have complained. I did use my wash rag, but at the very end. Second, none of the parts, not even nails, were missing or defective. Third, yes, it is manufactured wood-but hey, you get what you pay for. As for being lightweight and a risk for falling over; there is decent size warning in the instructions plus there is an attachment for the wall. So, i don’t see why people were disillusioned. I haven’t put the books yet, but i have heeded the warnings from others, and have metal supports for the shelves in case plastic doesn’t hold; but once again, i am going to give the factory pieces a try first.

I’ve had this bookcase for over 5 months, it went through a moving with me recently and seriously, it looks just like when i first got it. Perfect size, not too big, not too small, not too heavy. Wood is nice and thick, i put all together by myself when i was 8 months pregnant and took me 25 minutes.

Yep, they are cheap particle board. But, they are a good deal and i used three of them and then trimmed them out with real wood for the top of a hutch i put together in family room. Secured to the wall and with additional finishing nails and trim they work beautifully. These are a great shelf to ‘hack’ a wall unit. At 58in high they fit perfectly on top of standard box type cabinet bases with a toe kick.

Yes, this bookcase is priced very low but don’t let that fool you. The color is pure white, no cream or off-white shading at all. It’s very easy to put together and can be done by one able-bodied person, however having an extra warm body to help doesn’t hurt. That just helps it go a bit faster. The shelves are sturdy as is the frame. It’s true that the backing on the bookcase is very thin but it’s nailed all around the back of the frame and is workable, especially since it’s tinted white to match the bookcase itself. I bought two of these to use one on each side of a white desk in the craft area of my guest room (one room doing double duty). I admit i’m not using the shelves for books, other than a few hardback stitching books. The shelves are holding stitching fabrics, embroidery threads, knitting supplies, craft supplies, etc. However, the two bottom shelves are holding 4 heavy binders and also my sewing machine.

I am really glad that the did not look at the reviews before purchasing. Yes it’s a cheap product but if you are not rough and take care of it, it turns out really nicely and looks fantastic. Putting it together took a couple hours by myself, but then again i’ve only ever put together a small ferret cage so this was also a learning experience. If you pile big heavy books on the upper shelfs, yes it will bow. But if you read the instructions heavier objects should be placed on the bottom. This is the problem with the other negative reviews, they are left by people who do not know how to read the instructionsoverall i’m very happy with this product (:.

South Shore 5-Shelf Storage Bookcase – Sturdy, easy to assemble, and looks great!

I purchased two of these shelves to hold my girlfriend’s rather extensive book collection. First of all, i like how large these shelves are. They are relatively easy to construct and i love the brown color. The backing has some noticeable creases, but i was able to cover those by strategic placement of items on the selves. However, for something that is meant to hold books, the shelves start to bend underneath the weight of those books. The shelves are made of that composite wood material that is compressed together to form a board, which makes them less sturdy than a chunk of actual plywood. If you are looking for shelves to display some fun odds and ends, this would be prefect (assuming you can hide the creases in the back); however, if you are looking for a bookshelf, keep looking. This is not the product you are looking for. I’ve attached some pictures to try to capture the bending. While you can tell there is some bending in the pictures, i didn’t have a long enough straight edge to show the full extent of the issue.

I’m a stay home mom so it’s much easy to order it through amazon. My husband questioned it but i found lots of good reviews so i gave a try. It only took 2 hours to assemble it by myself, and i also bought the wall stickers from amazon to make more fun. My son just loves his new reading corner.

Great for the pricewas looking for an inexpensive way to add bookcases to my daughters playroom. These served its purpose just fine. They were easy to put together and all pieces were intact. I think for the price, they are definetly worth it. At this price point, i was pleased with what i got.

  • Nice looking shelves that should not hold books.
  • What I was Expecting! Great Price!
  • Sturdy, easy to assemble, and looks great!

This bookshelf is a great purchase. I was able to assemble it in about a half hour, and it’s very sturdy, especially for its height. It even came with extra pieces of hardware (nails and such). It’s a great color and looks more expensive than it is. Overall, one of the best furniture purchases i’ve ever made.

I didn’t look too carefully at the dimensions or weight, but the 5-shelf bookcase is taller than me and was a hassle to lug up to my condo for installation. One of the panels arrived chipped (the lower front-facing panel) even though the box was intact. If you are picking this item up at a different shipping location, make sure your car has fold-down rear seats with a front seat that can be pushed forward – because it is a very long and heavy box. If you are bringing it up stairs or just moving it, it’s a 2-person lift package. I was able to move it myself and i’m by no means a strong person, but for safety reasons i recommend having at least another person to help. So overall, had i known or paid closer attention to the dimensions, i would have opted for the 4 shelf bookcase. Overall: 5/5 starswell-made, not too hard to install, just unwieldy to move around.

South Shore Axess Collection 5-Shelf Narrow Bookcase : Spruce your space without breaking the bank

I had one small area for a bookcase to go. My apartment was decorated and beautiful and i love it, but the problem was i needed a bookcase. My original bookcase broke and i needed somewhere to put all my books though i only had one tiny spot for them to go and this bookcase had to fit. It fit beautifully, but then there was another problem. I have too many books because i love to read. So i had to double up on the shelves and amazingly the shelves are still holding up great. I don’t feel like it will topple over and now i get to see all my books. Now i have to organize my books, yea.

Love the bookshelf was so easy to put together it almost did it. Took no more than 20 minutes to put together. Hardest part of the assembly was opening the box.Very securely packaged and shipped. Works perfectly in my office.

Easy to put together and sturdy. I purchased this as a nursery bookshelf and glued fabric to the back to match nursery decor. When hammering in the tiny nails to the back be careful because one nail was put in a little off and chipped the inside of the bookshelf. I feel like it’s a little pricy for such a plain bookshelf with no detailing.

We ordered this and it actually came in pretty much shattered in the box. We called them and they were really cool about it. They immediately got replacement pieces in the mail and it came in a few days later. Everything went together really easy and we liked the end product which we used between two storage cabinets.

I’ve built numerous shelving units bought from places like target, ikea, home depot, etc. This one was the ideal size (the ikea billy is its closest rival) for my needs. First off, i like that the piece numbers (letters) are stamped on the naked edge of the particle boards. Makes assembly pretty straightforward. As far as manufacturing, most of the pre-drilled screw- and dowel-holes are spot on. Not so much the case when you buy stuff made in china (are you listening, ikea?), where drill holes are frequently off by a millimeter or two. The only issue i had with this product (made in mexico) is that a couple of the dowel holes were bored out too wide, making the plastic dowels jiggle inside them and the seam not flush until the screws were tightened to a point probably beyond the recommended torque. The other thumbs-down i give to this is the packaging. For shipping purposes, the entire unit is shrink wrapped with a kind of adhesive plastic, and that plastic stuck to the side of c1 (the side that is most visible in my setup, unfortunately). To avoid damaging the ‘finish,’ you’re not supposed to clean these with any abrasives or chemicals, only a damp cloth, and the sticky glue/stain resulting from the over wrapped plastic, running almost the entire length of one side, was virtually impossible to eliminate.

South Shore Axess Collection 5-Shelf Narrow Bookcase, Pure White : I ordered two of these to hold towels/linens for a new guest bedroom/bathroom we’ve constructed. The items are a good basic value, but were a bit more flimsy than i expected and both were damaged slightly (chips in side panels) during shipment. This wasn’t noticed until after they were unpacked and assembled, so i simply repaired them as best i could by myself. Overall, they are a good value for the price, but check for shipping damage before assembly.

Everyone)when i purchased this, i went on a limb and got https://www. Com/gp/aw/d/b072k548nf?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title too – 2 orders, since there are 3 storage bins per order. I hoped and prayed these bins would fit. These bins are perfect for this shelving unit. Seriously, they are snug but not squeezed in. I haven’t put the rope handles on yet, but there is room in the shelf for them to fit comfortably. Yes, the bins hang over the front by about 1/4 an inch, but i’ll take iti may adjust the shelf spacing later so they are “even”, but it’s been a long day and i’m tired.

I assembled this during my lunch break with plenty of time to spare. The only issue i have is assembly steps 5 & 7 should be reversed. I caught it, which prevented me from anchoring the cabinet to the wall, and then undoing it to pull the cabinet away from the wall to install the screw caps. This is a beautiful piece of furniture for my office, easily assembled, and strong enough for my manuals and binders.

I started to put it together at night but couldn’t complete out of consideration for my neighbors since you need to hammer in the nails. The box came slightly damaged (corners crumpled, rip in one of the sides) and when i took the pieces out i got a bent shelf corner and the top piece broken and bent, pictures provided. Fortunately i was still able to put it together, but take note: ordering this item is like a crap shoot on whether your item will return without damage. I consider myself slightly lucky since i am still able to have a working bookshelf. It’s a decent bookshelf, the attached shelves should hold up 30 pounds easily even thought it’s a composite material, but nothing to rave about. They did a decent job protecting the edges within the packaging, but don’t plan on having a bookcase without damage.

I usually stay away from ‘fake’ furniture. But, this was on sale for $54. , i ordered two, as bookends of a wall unit with rods i was building for a room sized closet. Then realized, i’d rather just build the units myself with real wood. It was too late to cancel my order, so they came a few days later. They were in great condition considering how heavy the boxes are. Easy to put together, very heavy duty, look good, nice color. Often the compressed wood can feel cheap and like it would break easily, these are not like that. As the product they are, they are excellent- admittedly, i don’t love laminated particle panels so i would not order again, but if i did, i would definitely but this brand.

I ordered two (2) of these bookshelves and they are ok, about what i expected. I did not expect them to be made from particle board though since the description on the amazon page stated they were made from wood. But they will serve their purpose. Upon delivery one of the boxes had lots of damage and when i opened it one of the smaller pieces was cracked, but luckily with a few clamps and wood glue i was able to fix it. I believe these boxes are just too heavy and awkward for one person from ups to deliver them, but after putting them together and trimming them out with some wood molding sprayed with black semi-gloss paint i think they turned out rather good looking and for the price are well worth it.

This was exactly what i was looking for. Something narrow and tall to fit in my small master bedroom in order to put various things. It is sturdy and i think the best option considering price point (very reasonable). I knocked off a star because we did not receive all of the correct parts. Some of the shelves were supposed to come pre-drilled, but none of them were. Instead of offering replacement parts, which i was hoping for, i was offered a partial refund and we made do. Not ideal but it still worked.

I ordered this bookcase to hold my comic books and stuffed animals. The parts arrived quickly in perfect condition, but it was a nightmare putting them together. The back panel arrived folded, and when my dad tried to apply it, it split down the middle very easily. It caved inward, pushing the topmost shelf out by half an inch. My dad also found that a piece of the instructions was incorrect, and one of the holes was not deep enough for the screw. Assembling this takes some improvising. We sealed the rip with white tape, but luckily for me, my items are tall enough to hide it. The bookcase is very sturdy, as i didn’t need to use a wall anchor. I just placed a small ceramic tile underneath the front edge to keep it from tilting forward. Upon shaking it lightly, it doesn’t move.

The morgan cherry color matched exactly with my other middle-brown furniture and it slide perfectly into the space that i staked out for it. It was easy to put together and move around even for my 5’3′ frame. Two issues with assembly:- nailing the backing to the frame – i wasn’t quite sure how much space i had to hammer the nail in. – attaching the upper decorative overhang. The phillips i had was too small to catch the corners of the square head screw, however i just have it hanging there since the whole bookcase is fitted together tightly enough to just wedge it in. I assume that as long as i don’t hit it, it’ll be fine. After assembling, i immediately moved the bookcase to its corner and proceeded to fill it with books. I put my heaviest books on the middle support shelf and spread the rest out on the remaining shelves. I kept the heavy ones to the sides, but even still, i see no evidence of sagging.

Very heavy, had to take it out piece by piece. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. No missing pieces, in fact a few extra. This is your basic bookcase, good bargain. Yes, it is pressed wood but does look nice. The walnut color went with my other pieces that were made of wood. The only thing i did different was to take the top piece used as decor, cut it in half and screwed each half to the back for support. This way it would survive a california earthquake.

We wanted a bookcase to hold our printer and various office supplies. We had a very specific spot in mind for and the bookcase was about the only one narrow enough to fit the space that i liked. Also we did not want to spend a ton of money, and we knew that we were going to get something we would have to assemble, and that it would not be solid wood. One of the pieces arrived damaged (it was cracked through the middle, and i am sure it got damaged during shipping) but i had to call the company twice to get a replacement. The first time i called about the damage i was sent the wrong piece and had to call them again. Each time they were very nice and apologetic and the replacement piece arrived quickly. But it did mean we had to wait over a week before we could assemble the bookshelf. The bookshelf was easy enough to assemble (my husband did it by himself in like 20 minutes) and it fits in the designated space perfectly. I like that 2 of the shelves are fixed and the others adjustable. I placed the heaviest items on the fixed shelves (printer, notebooks) and the adjustable shelves got the lighter weight items such as pens, tape, etc.

This book case fits the file boxes and many books; it is attractive and fits into a small space. My son helped me lift it, but i fit all the shelves in. A few small parts, shelf holder pins and screw back covers, were missing. The company mailed them to me right away with no charge. I just emailed to them the part number from the instruction book. The instruction book has each part listed by number and the instructions are very easy to follow.

This is a perfectly serviceable product, which does what it does just fine. It does not purport to be high end furniture, but it fits well in confined spaces. My beef is not with the bookshelf, but with the terrible set of instructions that came with it. These instructions consist almost entirely of pictures — there is very little narrative. And the pictures are misleading. They illustrate some screw-like part which, as far as i could tell, did not exist, and if it did, it served no purpose. One of the earlier frames depicts pegs to be inserted into the side of some of the shelves for support, and then the picture showing the insertion of the shelves into the sideboards does not show the pegs. And of course the narrative does not mention why the pegs are there, or what to do with them. It took me about an hour and a half to assemble the bookshelf, and it should have been possible to assemble in about twenty minutes. If as much care had been lavished on the assembly instructions as on the bookshelf itself, i would have given this product a five.

This is four and a half stars. Some dents, minor chips at edges and very very strong smell: might take a month for that to go away. But, the package is covered with instructions to call them if any parts are missing or damaged so i think they are really backing the product. Fortunately for me all of the parts are included. I needed it for a small corner in my office and the height was perfect as was the depth. For reference, the chocolate matches a color called ‘black-brown’ in an ikea desk that sits beside it: it is very dark but that is what i wanted. Overall, it is a decent product at a good price. Some assembly notes: the top panel ‘a’ has two small holes to connect the front piece. I didn’t notice them during assembly so they ended up on top of the bookcase. Also, the back panel tears easily.

It’s tall enough, has the minimum number of shelves that i needed, and is a nice bright white. I truly wish it had been 3 or 4 inches wider to fit in the space. Unfortunately, no one had one that specified width, so i went with this. A bit difficult to put together. Something just wasn’t working well and there were 2 of us and once i had a third person helping to hold the sides even just to get the bottom and top on correctly. Not sure why it wasn’t going together smoothly as we are all used to putting together these types of things. It looks nice when put together and seems to be substantial enough for my books (which are many).

First, it took 10 days to receive this product, so don’t let the “usually ships in 3 days, etc” fool you. After it’s way late and you call, you will be told “that was just an estimate”. I ordered these shelved because they are delivered, and i don’t have a means to haul shelves to my house from a store. These shelved are super cheap, both financially and from a quality standpoint. The back panel is literally a folded piece of printed cardboard. Not some super-pressed ultra-structured piece of cardboard either. It’s exactly the same kind of cardboard that would box a large toy. I almost threw it away until i noticed i was missing the back panel. This must be tack-nailed onto the back of the unit. The shelves are pressed particle board.

Its decent for the price i actually put the back in wrong but by the time i put it together i was too lazy to turn it around lol other than that the thing is perfect.
